How satisfying it is to see — at last — Britain doubling down on the full fat, non-metric vision of Brexit we were promised in the 2016 referendum.

The flames in Belfast may look like cars set ablaze by rival gang violence, but you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. In the bigger picture, these lights in Northern Ireland are — in fact — the lights at the end of the tunnel.

The United Kingdom hasn’t been able to express itself in good old-fashioned sectarian violence since the Thatcher years, over a generation ago.

Brexit has been a long…

january 2021 to november 2024 in social media

Here is my prediction for the next four years public discourse in the United States, from the January inauguration of President Joe Biden to the Presidential election of 2024.

I warn you, this isn’t going to be an optimistic prediction.

And what’s more, I very much hope to be wrong. Take that as a given.

Here we go then.

Trump rallies will start immediately after Joe Biden’s inauguration. Perhaps the first rally will be scheduled to coincide with the very day of the inauguration — for maximum media coverage and maximum disruptive momentum.

The insatiable need for clickbait will ensure…

“Nothing appears more surprising… than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few, and the implicit submission with which men resign their own sentiments and passions to those of their rulers.… force is always on the side of the governed, the governors have nothing to support them but opinion. It is, therefore, on opinion only that government is founded, and this maxim extends to the most despotic and most military governments, as well as to the freest and most popular.” — David Hume (1711–1776)

Countless deconstructions of the cunning, pervasive, often brutal plutocracy are proliferated by clear-eyed…

The murder of black Minnesotan George Floyd has been the catalyst for coast to coast protests across America. History casts the murder in a racist light — whether or not the Minneapolis cops were themselves racist. #blacklivesmatter and #defundthepolice have gripped the public imagination, passions for and against exploding onto the streets. Americans of all races have become mobilized by decades of unchanging injustice, refusing to obey arbitrarily imposed curfews. Violence escalated and police responded to protests about police brutality with more police brutality.

There was looting. There were more deaths by cop. Was it an extremist insurgency? Trump fanned…

The difference between the United States and most countries is America, more than anywhere else, is designed to be a never-ending winner-takes-all contest of wealth and power. It rewards winners with riches and power. It punishes losers with bankruptcy and servitude. It’s this brutal war of real high-stakes that makes America the envy of the world if you have a certain self-centered, highly motivated ambition.

The everyday reality of the American battlefield is complex but, at its cutting edge, it’s about competing tactics for exploiting the poor and persecuting the weak.

Exceptional individuals withstand the forces of exploitation, proving their…

PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP is a long-term arrangement between government and business, to provide key services or improve civic operational capacity in the most economical way. The concept borrows from the axiom that market forces are the best way to balance the highest quality for the most cost-effective price.

In recent years the public-private partnership model has been a magnet for financial sector heavyweights, lured by the prospects of large-scale profit guaranteed by government funding. …

From innocuous roots in late 1940s postmodernism has spread like a steady but relentless virus. It’s become a kind of formalized absolution from having to measure one’s personal (or group) creativity against challenging standards exemplified by peers past and present.

It has calcified an implicit lack of ambition (and talent) into a consensus assault on individual merit, patiently but systematically building a citation-legitimized exclusion of all forms of non-conformity.

The postmodern networks of weaponized influence are both cynical and smart, directing the most merciless attacks on the most dangerous of targets: original genius in art and disruptive, uncompromising creativity in…

Some comics get lazy as success blunts their need for public acclaim. Some lose touch with the funny, especially when they’re churning out material too quickly. Not all of them, I should add, but it’s a common trajectory. The zeitgeist is a competitive place and a comedian with Tom Segura’s work ethic (and lifestyle) will be expected to release a comedy special almost every year. It’s too often.

Specials need material. They also need to let the comic’s personality shine through; and somehow stay true to his or her authentic comedy voice. Tom Segura has the personality down. He’s a…

Democrat, Republican: these are old paradigms. Both were appropriated post-FDR by rival factions of entrenched big capital, to ringfence key voter demographics. It’s a false dichotomy nowadays.

The bottom line in 2020 is we choose either some degree of profit-based corporate feudalism i.e. the status quo, with Biden, Bloomberg and to a lesser extent Warren; or Sanders’ honest but system-disruptive course correction to social democracy.

It is important to understand how the American dream coming out of World War Two got hijacked by the billionaires and corporations of the late 1940s/early 1950s. FDR knew it, hence trying to publish his…

U.B.I. (Universal Basic Income) — Gateway Drug To Fascist Authoritarianism

WHAT IS UBI?

Universal Basic Income isn’t a new idea but it’s getting a lot of airtime lately and winning supporters, especially as the economics are shown to align with what seems like a clear and present social benefit. In short U.B.I. means everyone in the country receives a minimum baseline income, from the government, to take care of the necessities of life. It’s usually presented as no-strings attached i.e. available for all, regardless of wealth or employment status and it’s separate to provisions like welfare, social security, disability allowance…
